Firewood and charcoal are still being used for cooking in large parts of Kenya. In the rural areas, women and children waste lots of their time looking for wood, having no alternative because of their poverty. Deforestation is taking place in a large scale, but there are no effective reforestation programs. As a consequence, the ground water levels lower, making it harder to get drinking water.
Band Pro's Hendrik Voss has initiated a solar cooker project in Kenya together with the public charity organisation EG-Solar. Solar cookers use the sun's free and unlimited energy for cooking. No trees have to be cut and a cooker can last for many years.
The cookers are built by local craftsmen in Suna-Migori, Kenya. Only the special coated reflector sheets are imported from Germany.
Band Pro Munich donated ten sets of reflector sheets to the solar project for Christmas 2009. Hendrik Voss will assemble them with the Kenyan team in January 2010 and and contribute them to childrens homes, schools and hospitals in Kenya. We will keep you informed about the project.
